Cheuk Yan Cherry Tung
BIOGRAPHY
Cheuk Yan Cherry Tung is a Hong Kong-born interdisciplinary artist. She earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2023 and her BA in Fine Arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2020. Cherry’s work explores alternative perspectives inspired by Daoist philosophy, using a microscope to observe small objects and painting them on large canvases. Her latest series blends European Vanitas themes with traditional Gongbi painting, addressing power dynamics between humans and nature. An award winning artist, Cherry has received the 2024 Emerging Art Development Grant and the 2023 Luminarts Visual Art Fellowship. She has exhibited in various venues in Hong Kong and the U.S. In Cherry’s current painting practice, she focuses on Gongbi painting, a traditional ink painting skill that she learnt in Chinese University of Hong Kong. In traditional practice, the painted silk is mounted on paper to create an opaque effect. Cherry intentionally keeps the translucent silk on stretchers, allowing viewers to see through the structure, emphasising the delicate nature of the material, which resonate with the precious and fragile nature of life.
