Denton Chen
BIOGRAPHY
Denton is a film photographer based in HK. As a web3 native he spends a lot of time pondering the future of what technologies bring to culture and arts.
Having spent a significant amount of time in UK and HK, he blends together the languages, culture, and identities of both places he calls home. Themes that you often find within his work are identity and juxtaposition of subjects characterized by reflections and overlapping exposures.
He believes in the power of bringing people together and empowering people to express themselves. He hopes that his work will inspire conversations and ideas that can bring people together, creating meaningful connections across cultures and borders.
Having spent the past 3 years shooting film in HK, Denton has developed a newfound appreciation for Hong Kong’s unique character. It’s blend of street, architectural and cityscape photography has inspired him to document and find his own perspective on this hybrid identity.
Like many street photographers, Denton was hugely inspired by Fan Ho, Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and the whole host of Magnum photographers. Though he often pays homage to their style and composition, he’s found a modern interpretation of the decisive moment, in what he calls a “glitch in the matrix”. This is often found through double exposures, but comprises of elements in symmetry, shapes or colors. A glitch in the matrix changes from frame to frame, it can be shocking or serene, serious or whimsical, epic or mundane.
As a self-taught street photographer, Denton hopes to document a perspective of Hong Kong that is lesser known to the world. The stories that you find within his frames are that of people going about their lives. HK’s vast wealth inequality has created a strong contrast of how it’s perceived in the media and how it actually is for the vast majority of it’s inhabitants. His work is often an exploration into this disconnect of what’s unseen.
Denton shoots with medium format film balancing between his photography, career and his young family. He continually explores photography as a medium of expression and you will often find him wandering the streets with camera in hand.
